Jesus uttered these words that I find challenging and comforting: “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious about itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

I believe Jesus uttered these words with two ideas in mind. Firstly, fear of the unknown (“tomorrow”) is possibly one of the greatest fears in our lives. We are constantly seeking security about the future, yet the truth is there is very little if any security or guarantees about the unknown things…especially when speaking about the future. Jesus does not want us to get caught up in trying to control things that cannot be controlled…no matter how badly we want to. Jesus does not want us caught up in fear and worry…he wants us to be caught up in His kingdom and God’s presence.

Secondly, I truly believe Jesus said this in the context of community. The community of his 12 disciples but also in the local communities in which he taught, lived, and grew up in. These communities are part of the kingdom of God which helps us to feel less anxious or fearful about the future. We may not be able to control the future, but it is much easier to face the future when you have a community around you. You are supplied today not just simply by the divine grace of God, but also in the love and mercy of God working through your neighbors, your friends, your family…in short, your community.
